Forgiveness is cleansing the gunk from your soul
Last week, we talked about forgiveness— forgiveness is cleansing the gunk from soul. If someone does something awful to you, and makes you feel wronged, betrayed, taken advantage of, hurt, or angry— they put gunk onto your soul.
So you’re walking around with this gunk on your soul just because someone was awful to you. It doesn’t seem fair, but that’s how it is. If someone puts slime onto you, you’re walking around with this slime in your hair. Forgiveness is washing that slime off of you.
Dora the Hero
For example, Dora was trying to help her client with their medicare. So she was on the phone last week with the insurance company— and they were totally useless and unqualified. In our forgiveness ritual last week, Dora asked who am I being when I do that?
She’s a hero— helping everyday people fight giant corporations.
She thanked herself for being so capable, patient, and persistent. That’s what hero’s are.
When she thanked herself— she acknowledged who she is. That’s forgiveness. It’s remembering who you really are.
You are not their slime. You are not their frustration or hurt or anger. You are a hero of common everyday people.
Sofia the Black Sheep
Sofia has this perfect cookie cutter Martha Stewart sister who makes her feel like a loser who can’t get her life together. In our forgiveness ritual last week, Sofia asked who am I being when she does that to me?
She’s a black sheep.
She thanked herself for being the one sheep— who dares to have color— vibrancy, creativity, a voice— that all the other sheep secretly long to have but are afraid of. She thanked herself for being “the one”— the one sheep who steps away from the crowd and is brave enough to face the storm alone.
Jesus the Black Sheep
Jesus was a black sheep. And so is Sofia.
So let’s recap. Sin is when you get gunk on your soul. Sometimes that isn’t from something that you did. It’s from something that someone else did to you.
Forgiveness is like taking a shower and cleansing the gunk from your soul.
So when you’re focusing on how that person made you feel— it’s like focusing on the dirt on your skin. That’s not who you are. Babe, just take a shower— and ta-dah!!!
That’s who you really are. You’re a hero. You’re a beautiful black sheep.
